UAE Car Depreciation: 3-Year Loss vs Renting
UAE Car Depreciation: 3-Year Loss vs Renting
Part 2 of 2 · Rentai Monthly Car Rental, Dubai · @Anish
Short answer: In the UAE, a new car typically loses between 15% and 60% of its value in its first three years, depending on what you buy. Japanese cars lose the least; European luxury cars and EVs lose the most. When you rent monthly, that loss is not yours to carry.
In Part 1, we looked at how 2026 shook the UAE car market: new-car sales fell 23.2% in the first eight months, and analysts expected imported car prices to rise. This part looks at the cost most buyers forget to count: what the car is worth when you sell it.
How Much Value Does a New Car Lose in the UAE?
| Car Category | Value Lost After 3 Years |
|---|---|
| Japanese | 15–25% |
| Chinese | 25–35% |
| American SUVs | 30–40% |
| Electric vehicles | 30–45% |
| European and luxury | 45–60% |
On a car bought for AED 300,000, a 45–60% fall means AED 135,000 to AED 180,000 gone in three years — before insurance, servicing or registration.
Which Cars Hold Their Value in the UAE?
| Model | Value Kept | After |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus LX | 76–82% | 3 years |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | 75–85% | 3 years |
| Toyota Prado | 70–75% | 3 years |
| Nissan Patrol | 65–81% | 3 years |
| Toyota Camry | 64–68% | 5 years |
| MG HS | 55–60% | 3 years |
| BMW 330i | About 35% | 7 years |
The Toyota Hilux, Lexus GX, Lexus ES, Nissan Navara and Toyota Corolla are also widely listed among the UAE’s strongest performers at resale.
Which Cars Lose Value Fastest?
The same sources consistently place Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW, Audi and Land Rover models among the fastest to lose value. Chinese brands are harder to judge: their sales are growing fast, but at least one UAE marketplace notes there is still no clean public data on their three-year resale values.
Resale figures vary between sources, so we show ranges rather than single numbers. Actual value depends on mileage, condition, service history and specification.
Owning or Renting: Which Fits You?
Renting is not right for everyone. Here is an honest way to decide.
| Buying May Suit You If… | A Monthly Rental May Suit You If… |
|---|---|
| You plan to stay in the UAE for five years or more | You are not sure how long you will stay |
| You drive more than 4,000 km a month | You drive within 4,000 km a month |
| You will pick a model known for strong resale | You would rather not carry resale risk in an unsettled market |
| You have cash to spare after the down payment | You want your savings available, not tied up in a car |
| You want to keep one car for many years | You may need a different size of car as life changes |
If most of your answers fall in the right-hand column, a monthly rental is likely the lower-risk choice for 2026.
